If Only I had a Crystal Ball

There has been so much talk about the Pandemic and its economic impact. There has been a lot of loud speculation that younger generations in positions in the service industry don't want to work anymore and just want handouts. In our area, which is highly reliant on tourism, we're seeing restaurants and stores that were previously open 7 days/week and now they are being forced to cut back because they can't find the staff to stay open.

In my gut, I didn't think that laying the blame on stimulus checks and unemployment was right - and I certainly didn't agree there were whole generations who were just plain lazy. I thought perhaps, they were simply rethinking their priorities - like I was.

A recent CNN report confirmed what was until then just my "feels." It turns out that most of the people who quit during the pandemic were seniors over 50 who took early retirement. Why not? With the uncertainty about the future, the concern over the unvaccinated and social security benefits to see them through - early retirement made more sense than ever before.

And those younger folks in service jobs? Some left and others moved in - for a net effect of basically zero. It seems like younger workers shifted their priorities. Young two-income families found out - by circumstance - they could actually survive on one salary and there were benefits to doing so. Even those not yet responsible for a family realized life is short and you need to enjoy it while you can. One of my favorite quotes is "You never hear ""I wish I had spent more time at work" from someone on their deathbed.

So where do we go from here? There is speculation 4-day work weeks and better benefits will lure workers back. But what about all those who retired early? How will these changes affect fundraising in the future? It's an important question but I don't have a crystal ball (despite my close proximity to Sedona, vortexes, etc.). What are your thoughts? Drop them in the comments!
